Every Summer Has A Story!
Once upon a time, summer meant free time and trips to the library to stock up on our favorite sleuthing adventures with Nancy Drew. Summer may no longer bring lazy days lounging by the pool with a good book or long hours reading under a shady tree, but it still stirs up a craving for great mysteries!
Whether you read it, write it or live it, we're all for making it a bit of a mystery and seeing how hot your summer can get when you heat things up with some summer sleuthing!
For your summer mystery reading, we've got three great new series that keep us captivated on planes and trains and have sucked us in for some late night suspense—don't you just love it when you can't put a book down?
One of our favorite and wholly unexpected heroines is a Duchess and great granddaughter to Queen Victoria—Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie. She's penniless, a touch clumsy, and is constantly stumbling in and out of trouble. From Transylvania to the French Mediterranean, her life is never dull and somehow always manages to be full of murder and intrigue. Author Rhys Bowen has created one of the most addictive series that we've picked up in years. The Royal Spyness Mysteries are so good we're on our second reading. Rumor has it that a movie is even in the works, so we're crossing our fingers.
Our second discovery of the year is the Sally Lockhart Quartet. We met Sally as was a result of reading Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass), which we also loved and highly recommend. Sally sets an example for fearlessness and intrepid perseverance as she takes on ruthless villains as well as Victorian society, pushing for freedom to live, work and achieve independent of a man. She is an amazing character of strength and determination and reminds us of the early days of the Nancy Drew series, where a single woman dared to face her fears and show strength and courage in the face of danger.
Finally we'll return to another character brought to life by the prolific Rhys Bowen, the amazing Molly Murphy. The Molly Murphy Mysteries are set in New York at the birth of the 20th century. They bring to life a portrait of what it was like to live in the time of suffragettes, Harry Houdini, muckrakers, and Tammany Hall in a city so hot, Molly finds cultures and classes melting together into chaos where anything can happen. She is a female detective before there were lady detectives and she is constantly struggling with her role as a woman, caught between her career and the man she loves.
Every one of these series feeds our obsession with romance, history and mystery. Not only do they take us on a nail biting adventure, but we get to experience what it was like to be a woman in another age where women weren’t encouraged to be strong and adventurous, much less solving crimes. This is exactly what made us fall in love with Nancy Drew years ago, and we love that we've chanced on a couple of amazing writers keeping the same sleuthing spirit alive.
Now if you want to dive even deeper into our mystery binge, we've got a couple of ideas.
